- 2 ripe bananas with peel
- Half a cup of precooked cornmeal
- Half a cup of grated salted white cheese
- 2 butter spoons
- 1 teaspoon of sugar (optional)
Preparation of banana arepas
1-This version of arepas is undoubtedly delicious, as well as being a great option for breakfast. Start by washing the ripe bananas very well because you must cook them with skin.
2-Put a pot with water to boil and, when it reaches the boiling point, add the bananas with your skin and let them cook until they are soft.
3-Strain and let cool for 10 minutes. Then peel the bananas with care not to burn yourself, put them in a bowl and crush them with the help of a fork.
4-Grate the white cheese and add it to the bowl where you have the bananas. Add the corn flour in the same container, the previously melted butter and salt to taste, if you wish also incroporate the teaspoon of sugar.
5-Then gradually add warm water until your dough is smooth and manageable, ideal to make the arepas. It is important that when you make the balls of dough it does not crack, a sign that it is hard; in that case it is advisable to add a little water to soften it.
6-Add a little oil to a skillet or budare and place it at low heat. While it warms up, shape your banana arepas with the thickness of your preference, go putting them in the fire and let cook 5 minutes on each side, turning them several times until they are golden brown.
7-If you want to give it an even more crunchy touch, you can put them in the oven for 5 or 10 minutes at 200 ºC. Once ready, fill them with salted white cheese, butter, scrambled egg or whatever you prefer! You will see that they are rich as it is.
